Empower Your Community

ABC is a dynamic training program that empowers you to create spaces in your community where children can be introduced to God and excel academically.

Sophakama Tutor Training

The gateway training for the ABC Adventure in communities is typically the Sophakama Tutor Training, which was also the first program developed in 2012.

The Sophakama training program is designed to equip Reading Coaches in schools, Aftercare Center Careworkers, and Private Tutors in communities with the skills needed to support learners struggling with reading and mathematics.

The training is divided into three sections:
  • Section 1: Students develop the skills to enhance learners’ perception abilities through various exercises. (Perception is essential for learning to read.)
  • Section 2: Students learn to implement the ‘6 Steps of Learning to Read,’ a phonetics-based approach to literacy.
  • Section 3: Students gain the knowledge to build a strong mathematical foundation for learners, focusing on counting and the four basic operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

The training typically lasts three hours but can be adjusted to a slower pace if needed.
All training materials are included in the cost, which is R350 per person in 2025.

Evelyn Lotz was born, bred and educated in the Eastern Cape graduating from the then University of Port Elizabeth with a BA in Biblical Studies, History and Anthropology. She is part of the Global Challenge Community in Jeffreys Bay.

Her journey into children’s ministry began when she completed a short course in Preschool Teaching in 1993. In the following year, she received training in Child Evangelism at Petra College. In August of 1994, Evelyn moved to Egypt, where she stayed for 5 years, teaching Kindergarten at a Coptic Orthodox Church school in Upper Egypt. She also taught Sunday School and trained Sunday School teachers during her time there.

In 1999 she returned to South Africa, where she completed a Diploma in Education, which focused on the Reception Year (Grade R). She moved to Israel the following year, where she taught Kindergarten and Grade 1 & 2 for 6 years. During her time in Israel Evelyn completed a Master of Theological Studies at the University of the Holy Land.

In 2011 Evelyn returned to South Africa to support her mother and sister. She started tutoring reading and basic mathematics within poor communities and discovered that there was a huge need for this. This discovery led Evelyn to begin training volunteers to tutor in these areas; in 2015 the Sophakama Internship Programme (now ABC Adventure) was started in Jeffreys Bay and has been running successfully ever since in many different towns.

These years of training and mentoring young people to start their own work with children in their communities have served to fuel Evelyn’s passion for Community Empowerment.

You are welcome to email Evelyn if you have any questions about the training.
